EFFY LIL
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO AND A RETIREMENT PLAN
Effy Lil has a dragon tattoo. First, she called herself “the girl with the dragon tattoo” in her profile. Then followers started asking where the tattoo was. She had to deliver. According to Effy, getting the tattoo was easier than coming up with a new bio.
By the time she spoke with RDX, she had built a phone accessories business, lived in Turkey, learned to DJ, and entered adult films. Her thirtieth birthday was days away. She planned to retire at thirty-five. Judging by her schedule, she intended to earn it.
IT STARTED WITH A PHONE CASE
The business idea was right in her hand: Effy loved switching cases on her iPhone. She started reselling them, then developed her own brand. Her first store opened in 2018, she says. More followed, along with nationwide shipping and a team that reached twelve employees at its peak.
Behind the striking appearance is someone who knows her numbers. By the interview, she had kept one store, largely because she enjoyed it. It’s nice to have somewhere to shoot a few Instagram Stories and remember that it all started with the back of a phone.
ARIEL AND A QUESTIONABLE FRANKLIN
There was no master plan for the tattoos. She simply began running out of available space. Her first little star represented a friendship between five women. The friendship ended; the star got covered up. Sometimes your skin needs its contacts updated, too.
Ariel appeared after her red hair earned her comparisons to the Disney mermaid. The dollar bill was less successful: Effy jokes that its portrait looks more like Russian actor Sergey Burunov than Benjamin Franklin. The symbols on her fingers are clearer: love, family, money, personal growth, and business. Her priorities are always in sight.
FROM TURKEY TO THE DJ BOOTH
The move began with a vacation with friends and a question: why go home if you can work remotely? Her partner declined to join her. Effy went anyway and ended up spending about five years in Turkey.
She describes the relationship that followed as difficult and abusive. Her account includes breakups, reconciliations, and a deportation she connects to her partner contacting the police. Eventually, she wanted a profession that would let her live abroad on her own terms.
That’s where DJing came in. Effy completed a course and started performing, playing melodic techno, techno, and hard techno. She doesn’t produce her own music yet; she mixes. When she first met the RDX team, the conversation was about music and business. The fact that she also performed in adult films came up later.
NEW TO THE INDUSTRY, FAMILIAR WITH THE AUDIENCE
At the time of the interview, she had been in the industry for just two months. She started at twenty-nine, determined to get going before thirty. But building an audience was familiar territory. Effy had promoted her stores through her personal brand, so collaborations, her own channels, and attracting followers were already part of her skill set.
She hadn’t exactly blended into the background before, either: dreadlocks, a Toyota Celica with a body kit, and sparkling purple-and-blue paint. She eventually sold the car. Looking good behind the wheel and enjoying driving turned out to be two different things.
MOM CHANGED HER MIND
When the business was starting out, her mother couldn’t understand why Effy kept putting her earnings back into inventory. Later, after seeing the results, she apologized at a family gathering for not believing in her. Effy says those words stayed with her.
She also told her mother about her new career herself and asked for support. Her mother gave it, although the reaction from other relatives was painful. After calls accusing Effy of “disgracing the family,” she asked friends not to discuss the subject with her mom. She was prepared to answer for her own choices while making things easier for someone she loved.
AN “OSCAR” AND SOME WELL-EARNED NOTHING
Effy wants her own “Oscar,” meaning a major adult industry award. By thirty-five, she hopes to have enough financial security to step back and do absolutely nothing.
She admits, though, that she loves reaching goals and might simply come up with another one. A woman who turned phone cases into stores, a vacation into a move abroad, and a profile line into a tattoo seems an unlikely candidate for peaceful inactivity. But let her try. Worst case, retirement becomes another project.
